I suppose that if you do not understand a joke it loses all humor when it is explained to you. That being said, can anyone explain to me what this means?

I think the clue is in the "Maybe it's just a stage" comment in the lower right corner. The cartoonist is questioning the intelligence of the designer whose end product is a creature hell bent on destroying the planet it lives on. Unless, as the critter-in-the-corner suggests, it's just a stage.
I found it thought-provoking but not particularly funny.
